Description of the Test:
The Utopia series consists of two tests, a verbal test which is intended to assess high level verbal critical reasoning ability and a numerical test intended to assess high level numerical reasoning ability. Both tests contain items relating to a fictitious environmental magazine entitled Utopia. A separate folder of information is provided for each test. For the verbal test this includes information about the magazine, its publisher and some sample articles from the magazine. Information for the Numerical Test includes circulation figures, cover prices, advertising rates and results from a readership survey. Candidates are allowed time to read the information included (10 minutes for the verbal test and 4 minutes for the numerical test) before being given the questions which are answered by referring to the folder. In the verbal test, candidates indicate whether statements are, according to the information in the folder, 'true', 'false' or 'cannot say'. This requires critical reasoning by requiring candidates to comprehend and evaluate meaning using precise logical thinking. The test contains 40 questions with a time limit of 20 minutes. In the numerical test multiple-choice questions with 5 alternative answers have to be answered by referring to the information in the folder. The questions involve extracting numerical information from tables of figures or pie charts and making comparisons. A calculator can be used. This test measures numerical reasoning by requiring candidates to analyse and manipulate numerical data. There are 30 questions to be answered in 45 minutes.
