Description of the Test

The Censeo Cognitive Ability tests are part of the Censeo Assessment System which is a PC based testing programme. It contains various questionnaires and inventories along with 8 tests of cognitive ability that are reviewed here. The system can be used on single PCs or on intranets with up to 30 stations. The 8 cognitive tests include 3 tests of basic skills: Alphabet Order: Lists of surnames have to be put in alphabetical order; Error Detection: Differences between strings of letters and numbers are counted Number Fluency: The results of simple calculations are compared. There are two tests of working memory: Odds and Evens: Number sequences are matched to a rule Word Rules: Word sequences are matched to a rule according to category membership There are two verbal tests: Reasoning Categories: Categories have to be ordered from rules, the order is memorised and then used to select compliant word lists. Deductive Reasoning: Respondents are given short sentences containing rules or relationships (transitive inferences), and answer a question requiring inferences from this information. The final test measures spatial orientation. Orientation Test: A description of the orientation of two arrows is provided and the task is to identify a set of arrows which matches the description. The tests are grouped or ‘pre-packaged’ for different occupational families such as clerical, sales, accounts, technical and executive. Alternatively users can select their own subset of tests to use. A typical battery might take around 30 minutes to administer. The tests are computer administered and scored and are supported by computer generated interpretation reports. In addition to individual test scores a summary score for the battery is reported as Capacity for Processing Information. Scores are adjusted for guessing and are reported as percentiles and as IQ deviation scores. Accuracy scores are also provided. Very low scores are flagged as unreliable. The tests have evolved from those developed for the British Army Recruitment Battery (BARB). A key feature of the tests is that they consist of simple items that can be computer generated. That is, the system is programmed to write new items and create new test forms according to a defined set of rules. It is possible for each candidate to receive a new parallel test form or for a new form to be generated for each testing date. Special retest norms are available where a person is retested using a different form. The tests are designed for use in supervised or managed administrations only.
