Description of the Test:
The SPM is one of three tests comprising the Ravens Progressive Matrices (RPM) family of tests. In addition to the SPM, the series includes the Coloured Progressive Matrices (CPM), designed for use with children and adults in the lower ability range, and the Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM: see separate review) designed for use with people aged from 11 upwards, and covering the higher ability range. The SPM was designed to cover the widest range of ability and for use with all ages from 6.5 years upwards. A new test, SPM Plus, is set at an ability level between the SPM and APM. There are also parallel versions of both SPM and CPM. All the tests in the RPM family are designed to measure eductive ability, a term given to the ability to draw meaning out of confusion and to perceive and think clearly. This is distinguished from reproductive ability, a largely verbal construct representing memory for information and knowledge. The Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale has been designed to assess reproductive ability. The SPM contains 60 problems requiring the candidate to perceive and determine the relationships between abstract shapes. The problems are organised into five sets of 12 problems, each successive set of problems increasing in average difficulty. The organisation into sets is intended to provide the candidate with sufficient opportunities to grasp the principles behind the test, and to enable the user to diagnose ability levels and errors made by the candidates.
