Description of the Test

The test battery is designed for use in the selection and assessment of clerical and related staff. These terms are used in their broadest sense and include such occupations as store-keeping, stocktaking administration and junior management positions. There are nine tests in the battery, subdivided into three levels of difficulty. The first level deals with basic office skills: Verbal Checking (8 min.); Numerical Checking (8 min.) and Filing (12 min.). The second level covers an intermediate range of tasks: Numerical Awareness (8 min.); Spelling and Grammar (8 min.) and Word Meaning (12 min.). Finally, level three checks specific skills necessary for higher clerical and junior management positions: Numerical Estimation (12 min.); Technical Checking (12 min.) and Decision- Making (15 min.). Separate scores can be extracted for Spelling and Grammar. A task inventory is provided with the battery. This is a checklist of job tasks (e.g. ‘sorting correspondence’, ‘calculating costs and prices’) which can be used by the assessor to select which of the nine tests are relevant. Usually a maximum of four tests will be necessary for any one occupation. Procedures are given for scoring and interpretation and for the production of profile sheets which allow a quick but detailed examination of the candidates’ results and help determine those tasks for which they are suited.
