Workplace safety and mental health

Team IIBP Anveshan, Issue 29, Volume 3

Employees and employers benefit from workplace safety. Healthier people come from safer environments. Employees who are in better health perform their jobs more effectively and are generally happier. Work can give you self-assurance, stability, and a sense of purpose. Mental health can be greatly improved by having a regular activity, working with others, and engaging in a skill or interest you are skilled in.

However, work is a grind for many of us. Working more than 40 hours per week for inadequate pay. Some of us have strained relationships with coworkers with whom we do not share a bond, while others do not care what they do and must nonetheless show up.

Others, on the other hand, wake up to a nightmare when they go to work. When it comes to a work environment, there are numerous aspects of safety. Physical safety is the most obvious and tangible aspect of these. The workplace can be a place of stress and anxiety if it is unsanitary or dangerous to work in. You lack financial security if the work you do is not compensated fairly, leaving you broke and exhausted, an unsustainable situation.

It can be very bad for your mental health if your boss or coworkers are bullies who wear you down and don’t care about your well-being. A study led via careerbuilder.in in the year 2020 uncovered that 55% of Indian specialists are harassed at their work environment. In such an environment, self-esteem, productivity, and a conducive atmosphere are among the casualties.

The general population experienced job losses, income and growth uncertainty, social isolation, and anxiety about contracting the disease as a result of COVID-19. However, some employers have used the “work from home” requirement as an opportunity to blur all boundaries, require employees to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and deliver more than before. However, we are more than just “human resources,” and empathy in leadership can go a long way.

Vedika, a brilliant software engineer works for a Bangalore-based unicorn startup. She is the only woman on her team, and she is also one of only three women in the entire organization; the other two come from the HR and secretarial departments, respectively. She gets talked over in meetings. She is wary of telling anyone about her plans to start a family for fear that it might hurt her career prospects. She doesn’t feel like she belongs because her classmates are all men who are also part of the same social circle. She tries to ignore the fact that it bothers her. However, all of this makes her feel down. She appears to be ignored as if she ought to pause before expressing her thoughts or herself. Isolated and alone.

She finds excuses to avoid logging into work without realizing it and loses interest in doing so. When she does log in, she struggles to concentrate and reacts defensively and impatiently to questions. At work, Vedika does not feel psychologically secure. Additionally, it has diminished her gradually to the point where she is unable to perform. Her organization has not only lost a potential top performer, the business has suffered too.

Beyond the framework of requiring insurance against injury and minimum wages, which apply to a specific category of workers and an earnings bracket, there are no laws in India that address workplace safety issues. Therefore, there is a void, or space, that can be filled by ethical actions. Some advantages of a safe and healthy work environment:

  • All businesses benefit from productive employees. For instance, productive workers are able to produce more work in a shorter amount of time, lowering operational costs.
  • Employees and employers alike benefit from workplace safety. Healthier people come from safer environments.Employees who are in better health perform their jobs more effectively and are generally happier.
  • More synergies and less friction could result from improved relationships between coworkers. As more people feel safe enough to be themselves and contribute fresh ideas, more work is completed and more ideas are generated.

Employees generally feel more at ease and confident when they believe their employers care about their safety. Additionally, absenteeism rates decrease and employees concentrate more on their work.
