Description of the Test:

The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test Second UK Edition (WIAT-II UK) is a revised version of the WIAT and brings together all the previous Wechsler Achievement Tests (i.e. the Wechsler Objective Reading Dimension WORD, the Wechsler Objective Numerical Dimensions WOND and the Wechsler Objective Language Dimension WOLD) in one test battery. It is an individually administered test designed to assess the achievement of children and adolescents aged between 4 years and 16 years 11 months, although there is a supplement with adult US norms. The basic content domains included are reading, mathematics, written language and oral language, with 9 subtests in total:

Reading

1) Word Reading assesses pre-reading, phonological awareness and decoding skills

2) Reading Comprehension assesses reading comprehension skills via the use of reflective questions after a child has read a short passage.

3) Pseudoword Decoding assesses the ability to apply phonetic decoding skills using nonsense words

Mathematics

4) Numerical Operations assesses the ability to identify and write numbers and solve written calculation problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

5) Mathematical Reasoning assesses the ability to reason mathematically and includes the interpretation of graphs and solving problems of statistics and probability

Written language

6) Spelling assesses spelling skills through the use of a simple spelling test

7) Written Expression assesses the writing skills of examinees at all levels of ability, from simply writing the alphabet (early years children) to writing a persuasive essay (12 years and above)

Oral language

8) Listening Comprehension assesses the ability to listen for details

9) Oral Expression assesses oral language abilities such as verbal fluency, repeating sentences verbatim and giving directions from verbal cues

Standard scores can be provided for each individual subtest as well as for each composite. A total score can also be calculated using all subtest standard scores.
