Description of the Test:

Simultaneous capacity is defined as the performance achieved when simultaneously dealing with routine tasks and tasks demanding cognitive performances (problem solving). Another description of this capacity is “multi-tasking”. Stress tolerance is defined as the extent to which performance differs when dealing with corresponding routine tasks under normal (baseline) and stress conditions. SIMKAP consists of five sub-tests. The first three represent the routine tasks and aim to measure baseline perceptual speed and accuracy. They differ in content (numbers, letters and figures, respectively). In each item, respondents have to look at the left-hand block of these values to see which of the values have been crossed out and mark the corresponding values on the right-hand side, which may be placed in a slightly different position within the block to those on the left. The task is to identify and mark these as quickly and as accurately as possible. In the fourth sub-test, problem solving is required. Questions are posed aurally and respondents must mark the answer to the question posed from a selection of answer options displayed at the bottom of the screen. In order to answer some of these questions, folders must be opened; for example, to find out where the person is supposed to be at 9am on Wednesday morning, the respondent must click on a button labelled ‘calendar’. The fifth and final test is the actual test of Simultaneous Capacity and Stress Tolerance. It combines the previous ones, requiring respondents to perform routine tasks of perceptual speed / accuracy and tasks involving problem solving simultaneously. Some new tasks are introduced involving the use of a calendar and a telephone book. Only one form of the test exists. Testing time, including time for the questions, solving the practice items and actual testing time is approximately 40 minutes. The testing time for the last test is 18 minutes. For the administration of the test a sound card and speakers or headphones are necessary. Listed under the heading of “Special Ability Tests”, SIMKAP is primarily intended for personnel selection, career counselling, diagnosis and assessment. Other areas of application are railway and aviation psychology, military psychology.and clinical psychology.
